Is organic food worth the extra cost?

A new Stanford study concludes that organic foods are no safer or healthier than conventionally grown foods. While the study did find lower contamination from antibiotic resistant bacteria and pesticide residues in organic foods, it considered the differences insignificant. The study also found that certain nutrient levels and health benefits were identical between organic and conventional food.

This year’s fourth annual World MRSA Day is on October 2. MRSA stands for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus, and is a superbug bacterial infection that is resistant to most antibiotics. Even though MRSA infection rates are under-reported in the US, data shows more people die each year from serious MRSA infections than HIV/AID’s combined.

Fall squash recipe

With Fall on the doorstep, it’s a great time to sample the delicious seasonal foods that Autumn has to offer. Squash is one of my favorites because it’s easy to cook and lends itself to many different recipes and interpretations.

One of my favorite Fall recipes is veggie stuffed squash. This is a light and mild yet flavorful vegetable dish that’s easy to prepare and makes a delicious centerpiece to a warm autumn meal. This recipe is also packed with immune boosting foods and ingredients. The recipe below makes two servings.

Chlorhexidine baths for MRSA decolonization – Get the facts

This is the first of a 2 part series on the use of Chlorhexidine as a skin wash and MRSA decolonization protocol.

In the news lately are more scientific studies confirming the level of resistance of MRSA and Staphylococcus aureus bacteria against the antiseptic skin cleanser called chlorhexidine gluconate, or CHG. Chlorhexidine gluconate washes are commonly prescribed to help prevent MRSA infections and help in skin decolonization for MRSA. CHG is normally well tolerated, but it does have some important precautions you should know about, including some occasion serious side effects.

MRSA Infections now exceeding AIDs and Influenza combined

A new study performed by the University of Chicago is showing MRSA skin infections rates are increasing. This new study published in the August 2012 Journal of Infection Control and Hospital Epidemiology is showing that the number of hospital admissions for MRSA infections doubled in academic medical centers over a recent 5 year period. It revealed that in 2003 the hospitalization rate for MRSA was 21 per 1000 people, while in 2008, it rose to 42 per 1000 people.
